Leadership. What is it? Leadership is when capable people step up to better their lives and those around them. What kind of leadership can we find at University High? Uni has multiple leadership opportunities in its 51 student-led clubs, such as The Class of 2024-2027, and numerous student unions, such as the Black Student Union, Latino Student Union, and Asian Student Society. Still, the chief opportunity to learn how to be a leader is leadership. It is a class taught by Mr. Ackerman during period four.
Any student, from freshmen to seniors, can be involved in administration. “There are two classifications for student leadership,” said Ackerman. “Associated Student Body Officers (ASB), who the students elect, and other student representatives who must apply and be interviewed by me [Mr. Ackerman].”
In the ASB elections, students can run to be officers. Still, they must have served at least one semester in leadership before running. The only people allowed to vote in elections are students, each given one vote to cast and decide who they want to represent their school. The date for the next election has yet to be determined, but leadership is looking to have it occur sometime at the end of the fall semester.
Mr. Ackerman later explained what leadership is looking for in Uni students. “To be a student in ASB leadership, you need to be a do-er, a powerhouse, and someone who is intrinsically motivated without having to be told,” he said. “Leadership is an excellent opportunity to stretch your legs and get involved in your school. Your whole high school experience is more fun when you’re involved in extracurricular activities.”
Leadership is an opportunity for students to engage in activities and events, giving them a say in what happens at Uni and helping them make a difference in their school.
