The Importance of Mentors

The Importance of Mentors

Shani P., Staff Writer

Everyone’s inspiration derives from different sources. Generally, it depends on what people prioritize or what career they want to pursue. Teenagers look towards celebrities, relatives, or mentors for guidance. Youth makes them susceptible to making mistakes, so they observe the course their inspiration took to avoid repeating them by imitating only their virtues.

University High has a high diversity of interests, so I interviewed Ian Sanshuck to get his insight into the topic. When asked about his source of inspiration, he did not hesitate to mention his private soccer Coach, Tucker. Ian is known for his interest in soccer, so his response was no surprise. “He taught me life lessons, self-discipline, and responsibility through soccer,” stated Ian. He also provided a quote that resonated with him, one he considers daily, “The best relationship you have is with yourself because you are with yourself all the time”. This interview displayed the importance of Tucker in Ian’s life, improving his mentality and encouraging him to strive for greatness in all areas.

This interview made me question who my inspirations are, and I immediately thought of Christi Steyn, a contemporary poet I have always admired for her creativity, talent, and empowerment. As a person fond of creative writing and romance, I spend my time on social media hearing her recite writing pieces full of emotion and rhythm! Christi has encouraged me to use moments, music, and love as molds to shape my writing. She motivated me during the quarantine when it was difficult to find positivity. I would like to thank great people like Christi and Tucker for providing teens with a supportive environment and inspiring work!
